Kevin Pietersen prays for people’s safety in Assam amid flood

Assam has been going through a tough phase of late. As if the COVID-19 pandemic wasn’t enough, floods have been wreaking havoc there. On Sunday, July 19, the situation has improved a wee bit. Five more people lost their lives, taking the death toll to 84 in the state. Around 25.30 lakh people in 24 of the 33 districts continue to be in severe distress.

After the natural disaster, a number of renowned personalities expressed their concerns. Sunil Chhetri, the Indian football star, dropped a tweet, saying that the state needs to be supported in tough times. The veteran understands the gravity of the situation and prayed for the disaster to end at the earliest.

“Along with the prayers, Assam needs as much attention and help as possible to recover from the floods it is under. There’s been considerable loss of life — both man and animal and I can only sincerely hope that the numbers don’t rise,” Chhetri wrote in a tweet.

In the meantime, Kevin Pietersen, the former England cricketer, also had something to say on the Assam flood. He went down the memory lane to the time when he got a chance to visit Assam back in March. The veteran, who is involved in wildlife activities, prayed for the situation to get better.

He took to Twitter and wrote, “My thoughts are with all the most beautiful people I met during my trip to Assam in March, where the horrible life-threatening flood is currently destroying lives. PLEASE BE SAFE!”

Earlier, the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) officials stated that out of the distressed people in 24 districts, around 17 lakhs are in five districts — Goalpara (453,858), Barpeta (343,707), Morigaon (341,788), Dhubri (315,838) and South Sakmara (225,209).

Forest Department and ASDMA officials said that thus far a minimum of 108 animals were killed, and 134 animals rescued even as 95 percent of Kaziranga National Park, which is home to 2,200 one-horned Indian rhinoceros, remained flooded. It remains to be seen how the situation gets back to normalcy.

As far as Pietersen’s cricket career is concerned, he was one of England’s stalwarts across formats. In 104 Tests, 136 ODIs and 37 T20Is, he scored over 13,000 runs with 32 tons and 67 half-centuries.
