South African team has been going through a tumultuous time, which can be gauzed by looking at their performance in the ICC World Cup 2019. The team managed just three wins including one over Australia in the last league match, while were defeated by Bangladesh.

They had lost their first three matches initially and failed to bounce back from that. This led to a performance review from the Cricket South Africa and they decided to scrap the entire coaching staff, including head coach Ottis Gibson, who contract as the head coach of the team was not renewed after the Proteas finished seventh on the points table at the ICC event.

Gibson’s performance was amazing, as the team beat India, Australia, Pakistan and Bangladesh at home and lost only to Sri Lanka. In ODIs, South Africa beat Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Australia and lost only to India.

Kevin Pietersen backs Mark Boucher to become the next head coach

Former England captain, Kevin Pietersen, who was born in South Africa, has put forth the name he backs to become the next head coach. Pietersen backed former South Africa stumper Mark Boucher to helm the new-look coaching staff, he tweeted, “Cricket South Africa sack Otis Gibson & his whole backroom staff. There is only ONE man who can turn their cricket around – @markb46! ” Pietersen wrote on Twitter. “He has trophies, he’s respected around the world & he’s an absolute beaut of a human! “Do the right thing, Corrie Van Zyl!”

Mark Boucher is the most successful wicketkeeper in history of international cricket with 555 dismissals in Test cricket and overall 999 dismissals including ODIs and T20Is. His career came to an unfortunate end, after he suffered an eye injury on his last tour to England and since then, he has taken to coaching and has been head coach of the Titans or three years now leading them to five domestic titles: two One Day Cups, two T20 Challenge titles and one four-day Sunfoil Series trophy.

As the search for the next head coach begins, Corrie van Zyl will be the interim coach of the team and will be the acting director of cricket. He will also put together a working support staff for the tour to India in September.
