The New Zealand cricket board has announced that they have retained the services of current coach Mike Hesson. The latter reportedly signed a contract that will keep him at the helm until the conclusion of the 2019 World Cup. In addition, Hesson’s colleagues, including batting coach Craig McMillan, manager Mike Sandle, and strength and conditioning coach Chris Donaldson have also signed contracts.

New Zealand chief David White seemed pleased as he addressed the media following the development in NZ cricket.

“This is very positive in terms of our succession planning, our preparation for the major events on the horizon and, not least, general team stability,” White said. “It was really important for us to retain the intellectual property and institutional knowledge that these people have developed.”

White also went on to heap praises on Hesson who has held the post of head coach since July 2012. “Mike’s the most successful coach in New Zealand cricket history and, in my opinion, the best selector we’ve ever had,” he said. “To have him committed to the Black Caps until after the next World Cup is great news for all concerned.”

Hesson himself welcomed the news stating that he and the team incumbent were striving in the same direction they were in 2012. He also stated that it was a ‘privilege’ to be a part of the side and to be able to contribute to the side.

“Being around a group which works together and is striving to head in the same direction is extremely rewarding,” he said. “It’s a privilege to be a part of the Black Caps culture and I feel lucky to be able to contribute to that for a little bit longer.”

Hesson has been a key figure in New Zealand cricket since his arrival. Under his stewardship, the Kiwis have risen to a force to be reckoned with including reaching the final of the 2015 World Cup.
