KL Rahul is mentally very strong: Vijay Bharadwaj

Former Indian bowler Vijay Bharadwaj has heaped a ton of praise on Karnataka batsman KL Rahul following the latter’s sublime innings of 158 in the second Test at Sabina Park, Kingston, Jamaica. Having played for the same state, Bharadwaj certainly knows what it takes to make it to the very top, something that Rahul has managed to achieve in his short and growing career. The 24-year old’s inning of 158 saw him bring up his third Test century with all of his three Test tons coming outside the subcontinent.

Bharadwaj, who has represented the country in both ODIs and Tests stated that Rahul was a multi-dimensional player who was suited for both Tests and ODIs. The former pacer also pointed out that Rahul had perhaps one of the best mentalities, something that has perhaps attributed to his success in recent times on the international stage.

“To me, Rahul is a multi-dimensional player and is suited to both ODIs and Tests. I, for one, never believed the prevailing myth that he was more suited for the longest format,” Vijay Bharadwaj, former Karnataka and India batsman and the man who picked Rahul in the State U-19 squad from the Mangalore Zone, told mid-day.

“The best part about him is that he’s mentally very strong. I have never seen him get angry and that calmness helps,” said Bharadwaj, who also coached the Karnataka Ranji team at one time. “His looks may have changed (referring to the new hair-do, the beard, the tattoos, etc) but none of that affects his cricket. With the game he’s always dead serious,” assured Bharadwaj.
