KL Rahul made his Test debut in Australia almost exactly four years ago at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). He had a forgettable game after scoring only four runs in two innings and it also turned out to be the last Test for the skipper MS Dhoni who announced his retirement from the whites. Four years down the line, Rahul has come back to the same country as a more established batsman and would be eyeing to make a more telling impact as India eye their maiden series win down under.

As a 22-year-old, the atmosphere in Australia for the youngster was too much and Rahul has now recalled the incident when the crowd tried to get under his skin in Melbourne. The flamboyant cricketer was fielding near the boundary line when someone from the spectators asked him his name and then that section of the fans started calling him wanker.

“When I was fielding at the deep square leg, someone from the crowd asked my name as they did not know me because it was my first Test. I told them my name. 10-15 seconds later the whole section goes ‘Rahul is a wanker’. It was amazing, amazing experience. They obviously mocking if they don’t mean it seriously or maybe they do mean it seriously. But this is what I enjoy about Australia, their crowds and how they get so involved and they go after the players,” Rahul spoke while speaking to BCCI‘s official website.

Playing in Australia is exciting

KL Rahul, however, is not bemused with the harsh experience in Australia and he understands how much the people in the country love the sport. This time around, he is looking to enjoy more and feels that the enthusiastic crowd makes Australia the best place to play cricket.

“The crowd is really against us, they love their cricket, but they will make our lives hard on the ground. That is why cricket in Australia is exciting,” the 26-year-old added. Rahul will most probably be opening the innings in the first of the four-match Test series in Adelaide and would be keen on piling on the runs.
