The former Sri Lankan cricketer Kumar Sangakkara has retired from the first-class cricket after playing his final game against Lancashire. He has decided to call it a day after a remarkable County season with Surrey. The legendary player has already retired from International cricket but is still playing in T20 leagues across the world. This year he was the vital cog in the Surrey line-up and played some magnificent knocks.

Sangakkara scored an unbeaten 35 in his final first-class innings against Lancashire and ended his career on a high. Now he has officially quit playing the red-ball game. He scored a massive 1491 runs with eight centuries at a jaw-dropping average of 106.50. However, one of the best cricketers for Sri Lanka is fifth in the list of all-time highest run scorers.

I am absolutely happy with the way I’ve played

Sanga while speaking to BBC on Wednesday admitted that he will miss the white jersey terribly but also agreed on the fact that he was happy with the way he played the game. “I’ll miss it terribly, without a doubt, but that’s a good thing. A lot of players walk away bitter and upset and regretting a lot of the things that might have been,” he said.

“I walk away with a few regrets, like anyone would, but I’m absolutely happy with the way I played the game and what I’ve achieved. Sometimes you hold on a bit too long and I always think it’s better to let go a bit sooner than later,” he continued. Sangakkara has been the stalwart of the Sri Lankan for more than a decade.

The legend represented Sri Lanka in 134 Tests, 404 ODIs and 56 T20Is in his illustrious career. He amassed around 28000 runs at the highest level and always respected the game. He was a crucial part of the triumph Sri Lanka achieved in the World T20 in 2014 when they defeated India in the mega final of the event.
