Kumar Sangakkara reveals who can break his record of four straight ODI centuries

Sangakkara expects the experienced players in the national team to deliver in the World Cup.

Kumar Sangakkara, batsman and wicketkeeper par excellence and now a brilliant commentator has been involved with the game for a long time. He created quite a few memorable moments during his cricketing career from his international debut for Sri Lanka in 2000, right until his retirement from the game in 2015.

The left-handed master batsman has been one of the most articulate speakers in the world of cricket and was a part of Sri Lanka’s 2014 World T20 winning team, one of the greatest moments of his career. Sangakkara also led the side into the finals of the ICC World Cup in 2011, where they came second to the Indian team.

Recently, Kumar Sangakkara was featured in ESPNCricinfo’s 25 Questions segment in which he touched upon some interesting facts of his career and life as well. The first question was which cricketer can equal or break his world record of four consecutive centuries in ODI cricket, a feat he achieved in the 2015 World Cup.

Sangakkara said, there are quite a few players who can equal the record set by him, but he felt that Virat Kohli is the one batsman who stands head and shoulders above the rest. It is his tremendous consistency in terms of run scoring that has helped him scale all the record in ODI cricket, where he recently completed 11,000 runs in the format.

The Sri Lankan was a class batsman and adjusted his game according to the needs of the match and format he was playing in. He played T20 cricket in many leagues around the world including the IPL, the BBL and the CPL and had an excellent career. He even captaining the Sunrisers Hyderabad and Kings XI Punjab franchises in the Indian Premier League.

On being asked which league is the most fun to play in, Sangakkara replied, “The IPL is great entertainment and the CPL, the Jamaica Tallawahs would be the most fun I ever had playing.”

Sri Lankan team hasn’t got going in the ongoing World Cup and with just one win in five games they played, while two were rained off. They are on a very tight leash when it comes to qualifying for the semi-finals.

But Sangakkara designated two players who can be the match winners for Islanders in the tournament. He said that both Angelo Mathews and Lasith Malinga can make a difference on a given day.
