Kevin Pietersen’s return to the England side suffered a blow in its first attempt as KP failed to get going in Surrey’s first match of the English county season against Glamorgan. Pietersen was dismissed for just 19 while his Surrey teammate and Sri Lankan batting great Kumar Sangakkara scored an unbeaten 112 on his debut for the team and put his side in command.

Surrey ended the first day on 363-3 with Sangakkara carrying his bat along with England wicket-keeper Steven Davies who also scored a ton and is batting on 109. This is Sangakkara’s 51st first class hundred. His 112 came off 162 balls and included 14 boundaries and one over it.

England’s former ODI wicket-keeper Davies said that it’s a great honour for him to bat with Sangakkara and also predicted an England recap for Kevin Pietersen ahead of the Ashes.

Davies said Kevin missed out here but I’ve no doubt in my mind he will get the runs he needs to play for England again. He’s been great at Surrey, I’ve never had any problems with him, and he looked great last week on a tough wicket at Oxford. Sangakkara was unbelievable. He’s a hero of mine and to play alongside him is a great honour. So to get that partnership with him was a special day for me.

Among the big names that are playing counties, Alex Hales scored an unbeaten 222 for Nottinghamshire against Yorkshire while New Zealand’s Jesse Ryder picked up 5-43 for Essex against Kent. Indian batsman Cheteshwar Pujara is in action for Yorkshire against Nottinghamshire.
