Mohammad Kaif, who will represent the Indian Maharajas in the Legends League Cricket, has said that he will lead the side in the first two games of the tournament. Virender Sehwag was originally named the captain of the team but he won’t play the first two games due to personal reasons. The first edition of the league will start from January 20 and conclude on January 29. World Giants is the third team of the tournament alongside Indian Maharajas and Asia Lions.

The three-nation tournament will be played in the double round-robin format and the top two teams will play the final. The opening match will be played between Indian Maharajas and Asia Lions. All the games will be played on the Ministry Turf in Al Amerat city in Oman. The Lions will be led by former Pakistan skipper Misbah-Ul-Haq while the Giants will be led by 2016 T20 World Cup winning captain Darren Sammy.

Meanwhile, while speaking ahead of the opening game, former India batter Mohammad Kaif has revealed that he will lead the side for the first two games. India’s next game will be against the same opposition on January 24. Kaif added that he has captained a team in the domestic circuit and is looking forward to the challenge.

Virender Sehwag has some personal issues: Kaif

“Sehwag has some personal issues so could not come for the opening match. He may join later, I will lead the Indian side in the first two matches. I have captained in a lot of matches including at the domestic level. I’ve also been a coach, mentor, and do commentary now in my involvement with the game for many years. So it will be a lot of fun. Looking forward to it,” said Kaif on the eve of the tournament as quoted by Zee news.

The 41-year-old was asked whether the players will carry the same intensity as they had in their playing days against Pakistan. He replied that nobody wants to lose.

“Nobody wants to lose, being a sportsperson everyone wants to give their best potential,” the 41-year-old replied. It all will depend on our fitness on the field and how they respond to the situation. Shoaib can still bowl at 140kph. He has arrived today and we will see how it goes,” added Misbah-ul-Haq.
