India is already paining through the misery of the coronavirus pandemic. Everyday, people are dying and there’s no limit to when the carnage will stop. Amidst all the chaos, a shameful occurring has taken place in Kerala. A pregnant wild elephant at the Silent Valley Forest fell prey to human cruelty after a pineapple, filled with firecrackers, was offered by a person.

The elephant chewed the pineapple, which burst inside the mouth. A senior official put forth the news on Tuesday, June 3. The elephant breathed its last at Velliyar River in Malappuram district on May 27. The post-mortem revealed that the animal was pregnant. Photos revealed that the elephant stood in the river with her mouth and trunk in water, for some relief from the pain.

The forest authorities brought two captive elephants who were called Surendran and  Neelakanthan, to take the pregnant elephant out of the water. Later on, the elephant was taken back inside the forest in a truck where she was cremated.

“Her jaw was broken and she was unable to eat after she chewed the pineapple and it exploded in her mouth. It is certain that she was offered the pineapple filled with crackers to eliminate her,” Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife) and Chief Wildlife Warden Surendrakumar told.

“When we saw her, she was standing in the river, with her head dipped in the water. She had a sixth sense that she was going to die. She took the Jalasamadhi in the river in a standing position,” Mohan Krishnan, a forest officer, posted on his Facebook page.

Kohli devastated

Meanwhile, Virat Kohli, the skipper of the Indian national cricket team, was devastated by what happened. Earlier, his wife Anushka Sharma expressed grief and it wasn’t any different for Virat, who’s appalled by the horrific incident.

He took to his Instagram handle and wrote, “Appalled to hear about what happened in Kerala. Let’s treat our animals with love and bring an end to these cowardly acts.” Instances of animal abuses aren’t uncommon and the latest one enraged a lot of people, including celebrities.
