The Indian Premier League (IPL) is the richest cricket league in the world at the moment. The cricketers have often remarked that the IPL plays a big part in their lives and is a tournament where they wish to compete. The tournament is often referred to as the ‘cash rich’ T20 league. When in comparison with other T20 leagues like the PSL, BBL, and the BPL, the IPL offers a prize money way more than the other leagues.

However, when compared on a broader scale with the other sporting events, it is worth noting that the prize money of the Indian Premier League is not as high as one would rate it to be. A recent statistic analysis in the Inside Sport has compared the IPL prize money and the prize money of the Tennis grand slams. Tennis is one of the richest sports in the world.

The IPL prize money stands at INR 52 crores, with INR 26 crores going to the winning side. INR 13 crores is awarded to the runners-up. On the contrary, the French Open organisers have increased their budgets for the prize money this year from INR 22.8 crore to INR 312.3 crore. At present, the French Open has a prize purse of INR 289.7 crore. Meanwhile, the US Open has the highest prize purse among the four grand slams. The US Open has a prize purse of INR 327.8 crore.

Here is a look at the Prize Purses of the Grand Slams and the IPL:

Australian Open – INR 277.4 Crore
French Open – INR 289.7 Crore
Wimbledon – INR 291 Crore
US Open – INR 327.8 Crore
IPL – INR 52 Crore

Individual prize money

However, when seen from the standpoint of the players, the highest paid IPL cricketer misses the top prize received by the winner of the French Open by just INR 60 Lakhs. Indian captain Virat Kohli is the highest paid IPL cricketer and he receives INR 17 Crore. Rohit Sharma fetches INR 15 crore.

On the other hand, the French Open (Men’s Singles) winner fetches INR 17.6 crore. The winner of the Men’s singles in Wimbledon gets a prize money of INR 20.2 crore.
