The year 2017 has been exciting for England, hosting one cricketing extravaganza after the other. After the successful culmination of the ICC Champions Trophy, the Three Lions are currently hosting the ICC Women’s World Cup. Now, the game’s most honourable venue and the home of cricket, Lord’s has entered the Guinness World Record. Lord’s cricket ground entered the records for conducting the largest cricket lesson at a single venue, beating the previous mark set by the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG).

Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), in collaboration with children’s charity Chance to Shine, broke the Guinness Records for the ‘largest cricket lesson (in a single venue)’ on Monday 17 July. The session was pre-approved by Guinness World Records and was led by former England captain Charlotte Edwards with assistance from a team of qualified cricket coaches. The event also featured former England bowler Isa Guha. Almost 580 children attended, mostly from the Chance to Shine schools, for a 30-minute cricket lesson. The children were made to practice bowling and fielding drills.

Record by Home of Cricket

According to the official website of the Home of Cricket, Charlotte Edwards, a long-time Chance to Shine ambassador said, “It was brilliant to see so many young people having the opportunity to play and learn through cricket and beating the Guinness World Record set by the Aussies at the Home of Cricket was the icing on the cake!”

The event was a part of MCC’s partnership with the Cricket Foundation and their Chance to Shine campaign to reintroduce cricket into state schools in the UK.

The partnership is basically a part of the wider MCC Spirit of Cricket initiative to encourage children to play fair and to inspire young people to learn and guide them through key life skills. In 2017, Chance to Shine aims to reach around 500,000 young people; half of which are expected to be girls.
