The much-awaited bell was finally installed at the Eden Gardens today ahead of India’s 2nd Test against New Zealand. The auspicious moment also marked India’s 250th Test at home.

India’s greatest all-rounder and 1983 World Cup winning skipper Kapil Dev was given the honour of the ringing bell at the venue. The silver-coated bell was from Chandigarh and installed just above the sight screen at the BC Roy clubhouse end.

Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) president Sourav Ganguly was working for a long time to introduce the ritual which takes place before a Test match. Before Eden Gardens, the prestigious Lord’s Cricket ground in London was the only venue which had the tradition of ringing the bell before the start of a test match

Ganguly’s idea of installing the Lord’s like bell has been buzzing everywhere for few weeks. The authorities of cricket’s Mecca of Cricket reacted to the news in a sarcastic manner a couple of days ago. Taking to social micro-blogging site Twitter, the authorities trolled Sourav Ganguly for imitating the bell at Lord’s.

They wrote: “Great to hear Eden Gardens now has a bell for famous former players to ring before play in Tests. Imitation is the highest form of flattery”

Talking about the game, India had a pretty had a bad start today. The first session completely belonged to the Black Caps. Openers Shikhar Dhawan and Murali Vijay couldn’t apply themselves and were dismissed for single-digit scores.  Skipper Virat Kohli also returned to the pavilion cheaply.

But, Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane led India’s revival thereafter. The pair batted sturdily throughout the lunch session to form an unbeaten 90 run stand and bring back India in the contest.
