After clinching the ODI series 3-0, India thrashed West Indies by six wickets in the first of the three T20Is at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. It was indeed a convincing win for the Indian team as they did well across all three departments. While debutant Ravi Bishnoi and Harshal Patel took a couple of wickets apiece, skipper Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav played handy knocks.

Meanwhile, the contest also saw Rohit receiving assistance from former skipper Virat Kohli regarding a review. It was Ravi Bishnoi’s opening over and the leg-spinner seemed to have dismissed Roston Chase. One of his googly went down the leg and wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant was quick to disturb the bails. While the Indian fielders made a huge appeal for caught behind and stumping, the on-field umpire signaled a wide.

Rohit was evidently baffled by the umpire’s wide signal but he was in two minds regarding the DRS call. Kohli then came in and supported Bishnoi’s appeal, suggesting Rohit to go upstairs. “Main bol raha hu, tu review le (I’m saying it, you go ahead for the review),” Kohli told Rohit. The veteran opener subsequently made the ‘T’ sign and took the referral.

Team India didn’t lose review despite wrong call

Meanwhile, the square leg umpire had also taken the review for stumping before Rohit made the ‘T’ sign. Nowadays, caught behind is also checked during a referral for stumping. While Chase’s foot was grounded when Pant took the bails off, there was not edge involved. Hence, the decision wasn’t overturned. However, India’s review remained intact as the square leg umpire’s review was taken into consideration.

Meanwhile, Bishnoi went onto take two wickets in the game, earning the Player of the Match award on international debut. While Rohit scored a sublime 40 off just 19 deliveries, Kohli scored 17 runs. Lavishing massive praises on Bishnoi, the Indian skipper said the youngster has a bright future ahead.

“Bishnoi is a very talented guy which is why we drafted him into the squad straightaway. We see something different in him. He’s got lot of variations and skill-set with him. He can bowl at any stage and it gives us a lot of options to rotate the other bowlers. Very happy with his first game for India and he’s got a bright future and it’s just about us now on how we use him,” said Rohit after the game.
