Former Pakistan captain and flamboyant all-rounder Shahid Afridi is one of the most celebrated personalities in the country. The right-handed leg-spinning all-rounder was one of the lynchpins for Pakistan in the shorter formats of the game for a better part of two decades.

Afridi first burst onto the scene in 1996 when he captured the imagination of the folklore by stroking the then fastest hundred in One-day International cricket against Sri Lanka. Afridi is famously referred to as ‘Boom Boom’- a tag that he took too seriously during his playing days, reducing himself to an ‘all or nothing’ batsman.

However, it was his leg-spin talent that paved way for him to become one of the best white-ball spinners in the modern game. Afridi retired from international cricket back in 2016 but has continued to play in franchise leagues all around the world. He is currently plying his trade for Multan Sultans in the PSL and the all-rounder recently greeted the crowd where, courtesy his wit, he managed to leave the listeners in splits.

Addressing the fans, Afridi said, “Main Zyada time nahi lena chahunga aapka, apni batting ki tarah” which translates into “I won’t be taking much of your time like I did when I batted.”

Shahid Afridi has been quite active on social media since his retirement

The all-rounder admitted that his love for leg-spin trumped his love for batting and that is precisely the reason why he never really worked on his batting skills. Apart from playing franchise cricket, Shahid Afridi has been involved in a plethora of off-field activities which includes his work towards charity and voicing his opinion on important issues.

Afridi recently hosted Yuvraj Singh on his YouTube channel where he batted for the restart of the Indo-Pak bilateral cricket, which he termed as bigger than the Ashes.

“I think, if India and Pakistan were to have a series, it will be something bigger than the Ashes. However, we don’t seem to get it. We are letting politics get in the way of people’s love for this sport and their wish to come together. I think we need to put a few things behind us as well and so does India. We need to sit down together at a table and talk things out.” Afridi said.
