Former England and Somerset opening batsman Marcus Trescothick has agreed to a 12-month extension of his contract, which will see the left-hander represent his team till the end of the 2018 season, it was revealed on Friday (August 25).  The upcoming year will be Trescothick’s 26th season with Somerset. He is the leading run-scorer for them in List A cricket and their top century maker in first-class games.

Ashes hero

The 41-year-old Ashes hero has played 76 Test matches for England and has scored over 5800 runs, along with 14 tons and 29 fifties. In ODIs, the opener has represented  England in 123 games and scored 4335 runs. He has over 25000 first class runs, with 64 hundreds and 122 fifties. In 372 List A games, the left-handed batsman has piled up 12229 runs, with 184 being his best.

“Obviously I’m delighted to be staying on for another year,” Trescothick said. “My hunger, desire and passion to play is as strong as it was when I started. The Club itself, along with the Members and supporters have stuck by me through thick and thin and it’s an honour to step out in to the middle and represent them,” he added.

His work ethic is second to none: Cooper

Although the legendary opener was found struggling to get runs recently, going at an average of under 25 in the Championship matches this season, Somerset chief executive Lee Cooper expressed delight at what Trescothick brings to the table.
“The name Marcus Trescothick has become synonymous with Somerset County Cricket Club and throughout his time as a professional he has proved himself to be a cricketer of the very highest order,” Cooper told the reporters. “His work ethic is second to none and what he offers in the dressing room is absolutely invaluable. His enthusiasm for the game is infectious and his wealth of experience is priceless,” he added.
For now, Somerset can trust on their leading man, as Trescothick looks to shoulder more expectation and responsibility.
