In a much-needed development, BCCI has empowered the match referees to have a word with all the umpires to stay more vigilant during the matches in the ongoing IPL season. The umpiring standard in this year’s IPL isn’t as good as it was in the previous years. There has been a vivid error in judgements and in a bid to minimize the mistakes, BCCI has suggested that the referees speak to the umpires to take help of technology in case of doubt. The IPL governing council also introduced the DRS system for this edition, a decision which has contributed a lot to negate mistakes.

A source close to IPL chairman Rajeev Shukla revealed the development during the match between Delhi Daredevils and Kings XI Punjab at the Ferozeshah Kotla on Monday. According to TOI, the source said, “It is impossible to not to have errors in matches. But the umpires should be more vigilant. At least, the match referees are being told to speak to all the umpires to stay alert. This kind of elementary mistake shouldn’t happen at this level.”

Now the board sources are saying that the umpires, who are marked for bad decisions, are advised to take help from technology in case of doubt. “The referees are told to speak to the umpires to take help of technology in case of doubt,” another source said while adding that around 18 IPL umpires are doing seven to four games this year.

Instances of callous umpiring this season

Almost a fortnight ago, the Sunrisers Hyderabad versus Rajasthan Royals match saw a seven-ball over – after umpire Nigel Llong miscalculated the number of deliveries in an over. Even his partner and leg-umpire Vineet Kulkarni didn’t alert him.

Another flawed umpiring happened on Sunday night involving both SRH and Kulkarni, who missed a sure shot no-ball towards the fag end of the match against the Chennai Super Kings. It came to the fore when the social media came out all guns blazing against Kulkarni.
