While Matthew Hayden‘s cricketing skills are no secret to anyone, not many know that the legendary batsman from Australia is equally talented in disguising himself. In fact, Hayden is so good to keep his identity under the wrap that he roamed an entire market in Chennai without anyone identifying him. The world came to know about it only after the former Australia opener himself took to Instagram to reveal the whole incident.

Dressed in the traditional lungi, hat and an unbuttoned shirt, Hayden sported a beard to make sure that he does his shopping in T Nagar Street Mall in Chennai without any worry. Hayden, who is currently in India as a commentator for the ongoing IPL, also went to the street shops and did bargaining along with a local guide. He was seen wearing a lungi and a hat, making it difficult for the cricket fans to recognise him. Thanks to his disguise, Hayden was able to mix with commoners.

But while everyone is amused with Hayden’s stunt, there is also a curiosity among everyone as to why did the Australian had to take such an extreme measure. Was it because he wanted to experience the local market from close or was he challenged to do so? Well, Hayden has now lifted the lid on the whole matter. Speaking to The Times of India, he has revealed he disguised himself in order to fulfil a challenge thrown at him by his former Australia teammate Shane Warne.

“It was a challenge by Warne to buy items for under Rs 1000. That’s why I went around the market to buy some lungis, shirts, Rajini sunnies and a watch,” Hayden said. He also revealed how a local boy helped him, saying: “I paid the boy Rs 100. And I can proudly tell you that I won the challenge (with Warne).”

Hayden’s love for Chennai

The connection between Hayden and Chennai dates a long way back. He first visited the city in the early 2000s during his stint at the MRF Pace Foundation. Later, he plied his trade for the CSK for three years. “I always consider Chennai as my second home and love coming back here,” said Hayden.
