Leicestershire Cricket Club has named Michael Carberry as their captain for the next summer after a winless season in Division Two County Championship. The former Three Lion’s opener will replace Mark Cosgrove, who has been leading the side since the last three years. Carberry came on loan from Hampshire earlier in this season before signing a 2-year contract.

Leicestershire ended up bottom placed in the Division Two County Championship. They also failed to make it to the knock out stages of the One-Day cup. The only positive highlight being reaching the quarter-finals of the T20 Blast, they lost to Glamorgan by nine wickets.

Higgins to Gloucestershire

Meanwhile, Ryan Higgins, the 22-year old Zimbabwe-born English cricketer, has made his mind to switch to Gloucestershire from Middlesex with immediate effect. “I have loved my time at Middlesex it has been such an enjoyable and exciting start to my career. I have learned a lot being here and ill take a lot of that forward in my career of course,” Higgins said.

“I would like to thank all the coaches for their hard work they have put into developing me into a better player than when I first started at Middlesex. I wish Middlesex and all my good mates here all the best in the future going forward. I am now looking forward to the new challenges for me that lie ahead at Gloucestershire,” he added.

“In a disappointing year for the First Eleven it has been heartening to see a number of young cricketers come through to win full-time contracts with Middlesex Cricket,” Angus Fraser, Middlesex’s Managing Director of Cricket, said.

“George and Robbie are exciting young cricketers that have consistently shown what they are capable of in our Second Eleven. Tom was invited to bowl at a Middlesex training session in 2016, where he made a positive impression. This led to him being taken on by the MCC Young Cricketers in 2017,” he further noted.
