New Zealand speedster Tim Southee has been denied a special catch in the Indian Premier League after the third umpire ruled against his efforts. The catch came early on in Sunrisers Hyderabad’s innings with Southee running around the boundary rope to grab the ball with a big dive forward.

The on-field umpire gave a soft decision of out, only for the third umpire to decide there was too much doubt about whether Southee grassed it to give Sunrisers’ England batsman Alex Hales out.

Southee and Royal Challengers Bangalore captain Virat Kohli appeared miffed by the decision and were joined in their disbelief by the TV commentators, including former Australia captain Michael Clarke.

Sharing the same thought, former English veteran Michael Vaughan also took to his Twitter handle to opine his views. The 43-year-old wrote, “That was OUT … Brilliant catch by Southee … Shocking 3 rd umpire decision … #IPL2018.

After the match was won by RCB and they kept their playoff hopes alive, Tim Southee commented on the decision. He said, “I thought I took the catch, but you never know. It looks worse on TV, third umpire’s decision, but we won and that’s what matters. The way AB, Mo and Colin set the game up was great, it got tight towards the end but we held our nerve.”

Match Details

AB de Villiers top-scored for RCB with 69 off 39 balls with Moeen Ali scoring 65 off 34. Fellow New Zealander Colin de Grandhomme was also in the runs, scoring 40 off 17 balls.
Batting first, RCB’s total of 218-6 would prove too much for Sunrisers despite another top knock from their captain, NZ skipper Kane Williamson.

Williamson scored 81 off 42 balls at a strike rate of 192.85, but it wasn’t to be for him with Sunrisers falling short in the end, finishing on 204-3.
