Michael Vaughan rues New Zealand's defeat against India as Super Over woes continue for the Kiwis

It seems New Zealand have grown an allergy for super overs. After getting stunned by Rohit Sharma’s back-to-back sixes in Hamilton on Wednesday, the Black Caps squandered it again in the fourth T20I in Wellington. After the regulation game ended in a tie with both teams scoring 165, New Zealand set India a target of 13 and the visitors easily overhauled it at the expense of KL Rahul who hit a six in the very first ball off the stand-in captain Tim Southee over. Captain Virat Kohli kept a cool head to finish things off with a boundary to leave the home team distraught.

This loss meant New Zealand have now lost their fourth consecutive super-over eliminator since the controversial final of the 50-over World Cup at Lord’s against England in July last year. They lost a super-over contest against England in the deciding game of a five-match T20I series in Auckland last November. And now these two consecutive Super Over defeats against India at home again. What’s worse is that the Black Caps lost it from a strong position in both games.

While Rohit turned the tables around for India in Hamilton, it was the Rahul-Kohli duo who made it look easy in Auckland. The man of the match award went to Shardul Thakur whose last over saw the hosts losing four wickets while they had to score just seven runs to win the academic contest as India had already pocketed the series.

Former England captain Michael Vaughan reacted to the Kiwis’ yet another heartbreaking loss in a game that went into the super overs. In a tweet, the 45-year-old called the New Zealanders ‘lovely chaps’ but said they were “not very good” at super overs. New Zealand now trail the series against India 0-4 with the final game left to be played in Mount Maunganui on Sunday.

New Zealand have a poor record in winning tied T20I games. They have featured in eight tied matches seven of which saw the results determined in the Super Over. New Zealand have lost six of them and have won only against Australia in Christchurch in 2010. The only other time that the Kiwis won a tied match was when they beat the West Indies in a bowl-out in Auckland in February 2006.
