The race for Pakistan national team’s coach is becoming intense with each passing day. Along with their former captain Misbah-ul-Haq, former Australia batsman Dean Jones is also in the fray and the battle is getting closer. While Jones recently tweeted indicating something big coming up this week, it is learnt that Misbah is leading the race. However, salary has become an issue between the former cricketer and the Pakistan Cricket Board
(PCB).

According to a report in Pakistan’s The Express Tribune, Misbah has demanded a salary in line with that of Mickey Arthur, the previous coach. The PCB is not ready to give that much amount to a local coach. Besides, Misbah is also a coach in the Pakistan Super League and the board wants to part ways with that role if he takes up the national role. PCB chairman Ehsan Mani has categorically laid that dual roles for a coach will no longer be acceptable under the board’s new constitution.

The 45-year-old Misbah-ul-Haq, who made his international debut in the late 20s and went on to play in the 40s, scored over 11,000 runs in international cricket in a career spanning 16 years. His last international match — a Test — took place as recently as in 2017.

If appointed, he will be the first Pakistani to coach the national team since Waqar Younis who stepped down in April 2016. Former West Indies captain Courtney Walsh and former Pakistan interim coach Mohsin Khan have also applied for the position of the head coach. The race though is limited between Misbah and Jones.

Pakistan removed coaching staff after WC debacle

Pakistan removed all their coaching staff including head coach Arthur following the team’s poor performance in the ICC World Cup. Pakistan have failed to win a number of consecutive series now, including the World Cup, and that put Arthur and Co. under pressure. Arthur’s top moment came when the team won the ICC Champions Trophy defeating India in 2017.

Meanwhile, the Lahore High Court on Wednesday dismissed an application seeking suspension of the PCB’s new constitution. Under the new law that came into force on August 19, the number of teams taking part in domestic cricket came down from 16 to six to raise the quality.
