March 18, 2007– It has got to be one of the saddest days in the history of this beautiful game. It was on this very day, thirteen years ago, that former South Africa and Pakistan coach and one of the trailblazers, as far as modern-day coaching is concerned, Bob Woolmer breathed his last.

Woolmer was found dead in his Kensington Oval Hotel room in the wee hours March 18, a day after his side Pakistan were knocked out of the 2007 edition of the ICC Cricket World Cup following their shocking defeat to newbies Ireland on St.Patricks day.

Following the shock defeat, there was a lot of anger among the Pakistani fans as they took to the streets to burn the effigies of Inzamam-ul-Haq and Bob Woolmer in Multan and many other parts of the country. But that anger soon turned into shock and disbelief after it emerged that Woolmer had passed away.

World Cricket was shocked to its core after the Jamaican police after its initial investigation declared that Woolmer was indeed strangled and was murdered. Following the declaration, all sorts of conspiracies started doing the rounds with members of the Pakistani team also coming under the scanner.

However, three months later, Jamaican police backtracked from its initial statements and declared that Woolmer’s death was an accident.

Today is the 13th anniversary of Bob Woolmer’s tragic death, and Pakistani players of that era are taking to social media to express their condolences towards their former coach. Shoaib Malik, one of the members of that 2007 World Cup squad took to Twitter where he wrote: “Miss you coach #RIPBobWoolmer.”

Inzamam-ul-Haq had also made a special tribute video for Bob Woolmer

Earlier, the then Pakistan captain and former selector Inzamam-ul-Haq made a special tribute video for Bob Woolmer which he titled as ‘Fragrance of his memories’.

Inzamam revealed that Bob had asked him to meet on the breakfast table to discuss the future course of action, following the humbling defeat against Ireland. Woolmer never arrived and as Inzamam-ul-Haq was heading towards his room, he got a phone call from the manager, who asked him to immediately come to Bob’s room.

The former captain also revealed how the PCB distanced itself from the matter after it was declared that Woolmer was murdered and how they had to face the ignominy of being under the scanner for their role in the murder.
