MS Dhoni-led young Indian team, winning the inaugural World T20 Cup in 2007 is one of the iconic moments in Indian cricket. Coming into the tournament on the back of India’s disastrous performance in the Cricket World Cup 2007, where Team India crashed out after losing out to Bangladesh in the group stages.

Without much of expectations, India reached the finals of the tournament to face the arch-rivals Pakistan. The match went all the way down to the last over. After smashing a six over mid-off, with 6 required off 4 balls, Misbah-ul-Haq tried to scoop the delivery from Joginder Sharma over the short fine-leg fielder.

S Sreesanth placed at short fine-leg was given a fairly easy chance to catch and he fumbled a couple of times before holding onto it. Considering the kind of pressure on that catch, which won India the World T20, it was never an easy catch by any means.

This was MS Dhoni’s first outing as the Indian skipper. He was recently asked what he felt when the ball lobbed in the air towards Sreesanth who was definitely not the safest of fielders. “Talking about that final catch of World T20 2007, when I watched it on TV in the highlights, even my heart beat was up and the way everyone was focusing on that ball, I thought this is gone; this will go for a one-bounce four. But actually I was there when the match was going on.”

“When Misbah played that shot, ball went up and I saw that it is going at not so good pace. There was not much pace in it. Then I saw Sreesanth at short fine leg and before reaching the point to take the catch, he had already tumbled two-three times. I thought that if this one is dropped then no idea what is going to happen,” he added.

Easy catches are the most difficult ones:

Dhoni also pointed out that the easy catches are the actual difficult ones as there is a lot of pressure of what happens once it is dropped. “But I feel, easy catches are the most difficult ones in cricket because when you are watching the ball, everything comes in front of you. If dropped then this will happen, that will happen and the ball is slowly coming down. That’s why we say, being in the present is important but our mind is so strong that it takes us here and there. So, I feel that was one of the toughest catches.”

Speaking about the World Cup 2011, he said that there was a lot of pressure India being the host nation. “Because wherever we used to go, everybody used to ask the same thing, sir we have to win the World Cup, why, because India is hosting. I said, host teams have never won a World Cup till now. So winning was important, but after some time it was important for us to have fun as everyone used to ask the same question.”
