It would not be entirely wrong to say that MS Dhoni is the most popular cricketer in the history of Indian cricket. While the likes of Sachin Tendulkar and other former cricketers as well as current ones like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have huge fan following in this cricket-obsessed nation, MS Dhoni’s popularity is perhaps unprecedented.
MS Dhoni garners huge attention not only across India but also outside it. It does not matter where India play, one can always see Dhoni fans in the stands. However, the same popularity has also put MS Dhoni on the top of an unwanted list. The former India skipper has topped the McAfee Most Dangerous Celebrity list, 2019. Other eminent celebrities that feature in the list include Sachin Tendulkar and actors Radhika Apte and Shraddha Kapoor.
In its thirteenth edition, McAfee’s research identified popular celebrities generate the riskiest search results that could potentially expose their fans to malicious websites and viruses. The study ended with MS Dhoni leaving behind all others. Dhoni’s popularity has created a big opportunity for cybercriminals to lure unsuspecting consumers to malicious websites.
“The significant ease of internet access, through a host of connected devices has made it increasingly viable for users to avail content from all over the world. As subscription-based content platforms continue to grow in India, netizens often look for free and pirated content such as major sports events, movies, TV shows, and images of their favourite superstars. Unfortunately, they may not be fully aware of the risks that malicious websites providing such content can pose in exchange for this access,” Venkat Krishnapur, Vice-President of Engineering and Managing Director, McAfee India, was quoted as saying by Live Mint.

Meanwhile, MS Dhoni was finally seen in a cricket stadium albeit for a different reason. The 38-year old, who has not played for India since the end of the World Cup, was in the stadium in Ranchi on day four of the third Test between India and South Africa. India had gone on to win the game by an innings and 202 runs. After the game, Dhoni had also met his teammates in the dressing room.
