When the Chairman of the selection committee MSK Prasad announced the name Jasprit Bumrah in the Test squad for South Africa, people were shocked. At the same time, they welcomed the lanky fast bowlers into the Test squad with open arms. The youngster has been performing extremely well in the limited overs, sometimes winning games all on his own.

Talking about his selection in the longest format, which indeed was a surprise, MSK Prasad suggested he was in contention for a long time. He said that Bumrah’s domestic performances have been taken into account and considering he played a crucial role in Gujarat’s triumphant Ranji Trophy campaign, he deserved the opportunity.

“With regard to Bumrah, if we look at his performance in the last 18 months, he has been sensational. He has been phenomenal in both ODIs and T20s. Considering his Ranji Trophy performances last year, where he bowled brilliantly the whole season. It was a unanimous choice and we had no doubts about that. He definitely adds variety to the side and the nature of the wickets there will definitely suit him,” said Mr Prasad.

Talking about the youngsters who made way into the Indian side for the first time, “The players selected themselves. They (The ones who got selected) have been in good form and that’s why they are in the team. I personally feel this is one of the most balanced sides that will be heading to South Africa. I’m sure they will do well,” He added.

I feel unfortunate for Kuldeep Yadav

The chairman of selectors also said he was feeling unfortunate to sideline the chinaman bowler Kuldeep Yadav for the Test series. He explained that only two spinners were required for the tour and to select Kuldeep ahead of Jadeja and Ashwin would’ve been a big ask.

“I really feel unfortunate for Kuldeep Yadav, he would definitely have added variety. But considering we are playing only three Test matches and having the number one and number two spinners in the world (Jadeja and Ashwin respectively), it’s a big ask to select the youngster ahead of them. Otherwise, he is a top-class bowler,” He explained.

BCCI acting Secretary Amitabh Choudhary said that the Indian team will be leaving for South Africa on 27th. He also said that Virat Kohli’s suggestions on the tight scheduling of tours have been taken into consideration.

“Indian skipper Virat Kohli’s observations on the packed schedule have been taken into account and will be considered. Usually, the General Body discusses the future tours and planning, but a preliminary round of full members discussion will take place on 6th and 7th. The team leaves for South Africa on 27th,” confirmed Amitabh Choudhary.
