In a red-letter day for Bangladesh Cricket, Bangladesh registered their first ever Test victory against Australia, on Wednesday at Shere Bangla National Stadium, Dhaka. Skipper for the Bangladesh team, Mushfiqur Rahim revealed after the conclusion of the game that his boys had been confident of being able to achieve the victory all throughout. Bangladesh won the first Test match of the 2-Test series against Australia by 20 runs.Initially, the hosts were given a run for their money by the 2 Australian batting mainstays, David Warner and Steven Smith, who looked unruffled at the crease. It was spin bowling that came to the Mushfiqur Rahim-led side’s rescue and how! Australia were only 156 runs away from clinching victory on the 4th day of the Test when Bangladesh spinners ripped through their batting line-up and the Australian batsmen fell like ninepins.

Mushfiqur Rahim speaks about the victory

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Rahim related the thought process of the team during the Test match. “We were confident. They [Australia] were in front but we always knew that we have to pick two wickets to get hold of the match. We fought with them in equal measures for four days. The wicket was assisting the spinners and apart from those two at the top, no one had the experience to play in this condition. So we had the belief. Even when [Pat] Cummins hit those two sixes, I knew we just needed one good ball to clinch the victory,” he said.

The 29-year old skipper also opined that they were able to step on the gas pedal and amp up their aggression to match that of the opposition’s and added, “Naturally they had aggression but we were aggressive too. Not only with bat and ball, but with our body language as well. When there were six minutes left before lunch, [Glenn] Maxwell tried to take time so that they don’t face an extra over. Australia, who try to dominate world cricket had gone on the back foot and were afraid to face an extra over.”
