Former Sri Lankan cricketer Muttiah Muralitharan is all set to be the mentor for the Thiruvallur Veerans in the upcoming edition of the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL). Muralitharan is not new to the task and had served in the capacity of a coach and mentor for the Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League. He had tasted success with the franchise as SRH were crowned champions in the tournament in 2016.

Now, the owner of the Thiruvallur Veerans, VB Chandrasekhar, has confirmed that the team has roped in the services of the legendary cricketer for the 2017 edition of TNPL. Chandrasekhar, the former Indian cricketer and chief selector, noted that the team had never dreamt of having the services of a legend like Muttiah Muralitharan. He is hoping that Murali will bring all experience to the drawing board for the franchise.

“Muralitharan will be the mentor for Thiruvallur Veerans. It is something we never dreamt of, nor was it planned. The team required someone experienced to guide the boys and we felt Murali, with his vast knowledge of the game, could fill that role,” quoted Chandrasekhar.

Available for the entire season

He further added that Muttiah Muralitharan will be with the team for the entire duration of the tournament. The tournament will be played in the month of July this year. Chandrasekhar was quick to admit that it was a very nice gesture from Murali to agree on the job this season.

“Murali is expected to be with the team for the entire duration of the tournament. It was a nice gesture on the part of such a big cricketer to agree to be part of a State league,” he conceded.

“He is a good team man and I am sure the Veerans players will learn a lot by being with him. Murali has a wealth of experience, having played at the highest level and coached various teams. He can pass on a lot of knowledge to the young squad,” he added further.
