Murali Vijay has had a very productive season so far. Kings XI Punjab’s top order has seen stability due to his good run so far.  The 32-year-old, who is seen as a Test specialist, has been eluded of a place in the shorter format in the national team. But Vijay doesn’t seem be too bothered about that factor and is keen on making the most of the opportunities that come his way.

“I am in a very good space mentally and game-wise. I am sure my chance (of representing India in the shorter formats) will come. I have always looked make the most of the chances I have got, and at the moment, doing well for Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) in the ongoing IPL remains my top priority,” the 32-year-old told TOI.

Vijay pointed out that turning up for Jolly Rovers in the TNCA first division league helped him to be in good shape for IPL.

“We all know the quality of bowling one has to face in the TNCA league, and it was a good practice for me before arriving for the KXIP camp,” Vijay said.

The right-handed opener has made 96 runs in three matches, including a half-century in the previous game. His numbers in the tournament have been good. He played vital knocks of 42 and 53 against Gujarat Lions and Rising Pune Supergiants respectively, while he was run out for 1 against Delhi Daredevils.

“There will be days when you get going and pile on the runs, and some–when you may not score. The trick is to back your basics and give it your best shot. As an opener, my job is to provide the best possible start for the team. In Manan Vohra, I have a partner with whom my understanding has been good and that has resulted in us doing well at the top,” Vijay said.

The right-hander feels KXIP’s batting unit had the firepower to compete with the rest in the competition.

“If you look at our batting lineup, we have a good mix of accumulators and aggressors. We bat deep with someone like Axar Patel coming in at No 7. I think it will all boil down to how our batting clicks as a unit in the tournament,” said Vijay.

Vijay also said he will seek inputs on batting from Virender Sehwag, who is KXIP’s mentor.

“Viru paaji is one of the greats of the game. It is always nice to interact with him and seek his tips on how to improve your batting. He was a player who simplified batting and I am looking to get his inputs,” said Vijay.
