The Mzansi Super League is gearing up for its very first edition to get underway on the 16th of November. The League features some of the famous players from different nations. It also consists the ones who have called it quits from the international arena. The T20 tournament is the replacement of the Ram Slam T20 Challenge, the last of which was played in 2017-18.
With almost all the nations around the globe coming up with the T20 leagues of their own, South Africa have also come up with their own. Dane Vilas has been appointed as the captain of the Jozi Stars for the inaugural edition and has been deemed as the correct choice by the coach Enoch Nkwe. Vilas made his international debut in the year 2012 against India, however, had to line-up in the queue to wait for his Test debut for another three years.
He made his Test debut against Bangladesh on 30th July 2015 at the Sher-e-Bangla Stadium in Mirpur. He went on to play five more Tests, however, had soon fallen out of favour with Quinton de Kock in the frame. However, the wicket-keeper batsman is a household name in the first-class cricket, featuring in 138 first-class fixtures.
Vilas signed a Kolpak deal before the 2017 season, thus being appointed as the captain of the Lancashire County Cricket team for the 2019 season. The 33-year old was also the highest run-scorer for Lancashire in the 2018 season. However, he has made himself available to play for the Jozi Stars and is hoping that he can add some value to the side for the league.
Vilas thrilled being appointed as the captain
Dane Vilas was quoted as saying by the IOL news, “I’m absolutely delighted to have been offered the opportunity to become the captain of the Jozi Stars, and I’m honored and humbled to be in a position to lead this team in the upcoming Mzansi T20 league.”
The coach also fully agreed that to appoint Vilas captain is the right move. “Dane is a vastly experienced cricketer who will have complete respect of the dressing room, and I’m confident that he is the right man to be at the forefront of this Jozi Stars with this fantastic group of players.”
