The much-awaited Global Canada T20 League is all set to start today, local time 04:00 PM (IST 01:30 AM June 29). In February 2018, the International Cricket Council (ICC) gave a go-ahead to the championship and in May, it was decided that the tournament will take place in June. Earlier this month, the event came under the clouds as the contacts, schedule and flight details of the franchises weren’t declared.

The dates of the matches were finally decided in the mid of this month. 22 matches will be played between six participating teams over a period of 18 days. There will be a total of four rounds. Every team will play once versus each other in the first round, consisting a total of 15 matches.

The second round and the playoffs will have three matches each. The final is scheduled to be played on July 15. All the matches will be played at the Maple Leaf North-West Ground in King City. The excitement surrounding the event is high and the extravaganza is speculated to be a massive success.

Here’s a look at the teams

Toronto Nationals Squad

The team, led by two-time World T20 champions Darren Sammy has some useful players. The likes of Steve Smith, Kieron Pollard, Johnson Charles, Kamran Akmal and Anton Devcich are the experienced batters. Mohammad Sami, Kesrick Williams, Rumman Raees and Naveed Ahmed are the fast bowlers. Rohan Mustafa, the skipper of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is also a part of their team.

Lasith Malinga, the Sri Lankan pacer, is the captain of the team. The likes of Thisara Perera, Dasun Shanaka, Isuru Udana are his Lankan teammates in the Tigers team. Dwayne Smith, Mohammad Hafeez, Sikandar Raza need to shoulder the batting department. Sunil Narine, the wily customer from the Windies, will also play. Youngster Sandeep Lamichhane also gets his chance.

The squad is no short of firepower. Chris Gayle, the explosive top-order batsman, is their skipper. He has Andre Russell, Chadwick Walton and Sheldon Cottrell are his mates from the Windies. Tim Southee’s, New Zealand’s bowling all-rounder, his experience will be vital for them. The leg-breaks of Fawad Ahmed from Australia is expected to bear fruits for them.

David Warner, who is currently serving a one-year ban from Cricket Australia (CA) is also a part of the team and is also expected to be their stalwart. He has David Miller, Lendl Simmons, and David Miller, who are seasoned campaigners. Fast bowler Fidel Edwards will also be in action.
