Ambati Rayudu was left out of India’s 15-man squad for the 2019 World Cup in England and Wales. However, he was one of the back-ups along with the likes of Rishabh Pant in case some sort of injury concerns arose during the mega event. Shikhar Dhawan got ruled out after the second match itself after which Pant was his replacement. Prior to that, Pant flew in as a cover for Dhawan.

Thereafter, Vijay Shankar, who initially found a spot in the squad ahead of Rayudu, was ruled out after a yorker from Jasprit Bumrah hit him on the toe. Even after that, Rayudu wasn’t considered for a berth in the team. Rather, Mayank Agarwal, who made his international debut in Australia only last year, was called upon. The developments didn’t please Rayudu by any stretch of the imagination.

Immediately, out of sheer frustration and agony, he decided to announce his retirement from all forms of cricket. After the squad selection, MSK Prasad, the chairman of selectors, said that Shankar was considered over Rayudu as the former has a ‘three-dimensional’ game. Then Rayudu seemed to have taken a dig at the selectors, saying that he ordered a new set of 3D glasses to watch the World Cup.

However, most recently speculations did the rounds that the Guntur-born was planning to make a comeback to cricket. The talks have turned out to be true as he has indeed come out of retirement. Ambati Rayudu wrote about it an email to the Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA).

“I would like to bring to your notice that I would like to come out of retirement and play cricket in all formats,” he said. “I want to take this opportunity to thank Chennai Super Kings, VVS Laxman and Noel David, who have been very supportive during the tough time and are instrumental in making me realise that I have enough cricket left in me.” He will be available to play for Hyderabad.

In the meantime, Twitter is ridiculing Rayudu in a severe manner after his sudden decision to make a comeback. Some even labelled him as India’s Shahid Afridi, who gets into hibernation mode and comes back again.
