The New Zealand women’s team will take on South Africa women’s team in the historic 1000th ODI. The match is set to be played in South Africa’s backyard at Kimberley on Thursday. Both teams have had a rich heritage in the history of women’s cricket. The 1000th match will be a part of the International Cricket Council Women’s Championship (IWC). It has been 43 years since the first ever women’s ODI match ever took place.

The first ever women’s cricket match was played as a part of the inaugural Women’s World Cup in England in 1973. The historic match took place on June 20, 1973. Jamaica locked horns with New Zealand in the match back then. Unluckily, though, the game was washed away and abandoned. Now, over 4 decades later, New Zealand find themselves in the 1000th Women’s ODI. In all, 18 teams have played women’s ODI thus far. England women’s team has played the most number of matches with 305 matches to their name.

New Zealand come second in this regard with 298 matches to their name. Australia are six matches behind having played 292 ODIs. The Women’s World Cup has been staged 10 times and the Australian women’s team has the distinction of winning the coveted trophy 6 times. At the present stage, only Australia has ensured direct qualification for the next Women’s World Cup. The next World Cup will be hosted by England in the year 2017.

Australia have been the most successful team with 226 wins, followed by England with 175 wins. Australia’s Karen Rolton, Belinda Clark, Meg Lanning and Lisa Sthalekar, New Zealand’s Debbie Hockley and Emily Drumm, England’s Claire Taylor and Sarah Taylor, and India’s Mithali Raj are the 9 players who have reached the distinction of scoring 800 points with the bat in the rankings.

Only 3 bowlers have reached the same milestone in the bowling department, though. They are Australia pace bowler Cathryn Fitzpatrick and the New Zealand duo of off-spinner Catherine Campbell and medium-pace bowler Katrina Keenan.
