India would like to forget the memories of their opening T20I against New Zealand at the Westpac Stadium. Rohit Sharma and Co were pushed on the backfoot right from the outset and they slumped to a defeat by a mammoth 80 runs to concede a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. Moreover, their winless record in New Zealand in T20Is continued as they lost their third encounter.

Siefert marches on

India’s decision to bowl first floundered miserably as the Black Caps racked up a humungous 219 for six in 20 overs. Tim Siefert and Colin Munro took the bowling by the scruff of its neck and cobbled together a stand of 86 from 50 balls. Left-arm spinner Krunal Pandya struck first blood, dismissing Munro for 34. Kane Williamson also contributed with a quickfire 34 from 22 balls with three sixes.

At the other end, Siefert played his strokes freely and accomplished his maiden T20I half-century in 30 balls. The wicketkeeper-batsman went from strength to strength and notched 84 runs from 43 deliveries with seven boundaries and six hits into the stands. The likes of Ross Taylor and Scott Kuggelejin scored 23 and 20 respectively to ensure that the Kiwis’ innings got the finishing kick.

Visitors crumble

The run-chase didn’t start on a great note for India as Tim Southee accounted for Rohit Sharma’s wicket in the third over. Shikhar Dhawan played some gorgeous strokes to score 29 from 18, but he was castled by speedster Lockie Ferguson. Vijay Shankar tried his heart out with 27 and he fell prey to Mitchell Santner. Rishabh Pant couldn’t get the measure of the conditions and perished for four.

The visiting team lost their fifth wicket in the form of Dinesh Karthik after which the match was all over bar the shouting. Hardik Pandya got out to Ish Sodhi. His brother Krunal notched 20 runs at a tad over a run-ball, but to no effect. MS Dhoni came to bat at number five and he churned out a knock of 39 from 31. For the hosts, even as Southee picked up three wickets, Ferguson, Santner, and Sodhi got a couple.
