India have sealed the fifth and final ODI against New Zealand by 23 runs in Wellington. With this victory, they have also won the series by 4-1 after being hammered in Hamilton three days ago. The visitors slumped to 18/4 once again after opting to bat first, but the middle-order came to rescue this time around and the recovery was led sensationally by Ambati Rayudu who was supported by Vijay Shankar and Kedar Jadhav before Hardik Pandya took over.

Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan failed once again at the top in the testing conditions and Shubman Gill blew away another opportunitty. MS Dhoni returned for this game but even he was castled by Trent Boult with a peach of a delivery. Rayudu and Shankar played patiently and weathered the storm bravely. They added 98 runs together by taking their own time before the latter was run-out after an ugly mix-up.

Kedar Jadhav then played second foil to Rayudu as the run-scoring was accelerated cleverly. But both of them were dismissed at the wrong time with less than five overs to go. Pandya was set by then and he took a liking to Todd Astle by hitting him for three consecutive sixes in an over. Even James Neesham and Trent Boult weren’t spared during his 45-run knock of 22 balls as India were bowled out for 252 in the last over of the innings.

Bowlers pick wickets at regular intervals

The pitch seemed to have eased out as the day progressed. But the Indian bowlers kept a lid on the home side’s batters. New Zealand struggled throughout their innings to score runs and surprisingly, the pitch got slower in the second innings. Yuzvendra Chahal, Hardik Pandya and Mohammed Shami scalped wickets and never let the Kiwis off the hook.

James Neesham threatened at the back end of the chase but MS Dhoni’s smartness cut-short his stint on 44 to end the contest. The tail couldn’t do much and they could only reduce the margin of the defeat as New Zealand were bundled out for 217 runs in the 45th over of the innings.

Despie winning, the Indian batsmen were trolled, especially the top-order for failing to counter the swinging ball. Even Neesham was at the receiving end for being bluffed by Dhoni.
