Shubman Gill’s meteoric rise in the cricket continues with his maiden call-up from the Indian team for the upcoming series against New Zealand. Gill was initially not a part of the squad but was added to it along with Vijay Shankar to replace suspended duo, KL Rahul and Hardik Pandya. Both Pandya and Rahul are serving the suspension pending an inquiry for their controversial remarks on a popular television talk show.

That Gill is set for a bright future was very much clear when he started churning out big runs right from his childhood. He shot to limelight in 2014 after scoring 351 in Punjab’s Inter-District Under-16 tournament. On his Under-16 state debut for Punjab, he made an unbeaten double-century in the Vijay Merchant Trophy. And so far, he has lived up to the lofty expectations.

He enhanced his reputation with a starring role for India in the victorious Under-19 World Cup last year. The right-hander amassed 372 runs at an average of 124 and bagged the Man of the Tournament award. A couple of months later, he impressed in the Indian Premier League too while representing Kolkata Knight Riders. The youngster scored 203 runs including a match-winning fifty against eventual winners Chennai Super Kings which made the selectors fast-track him into India A side.

Gill recently gave the world another glimpse of his immense potential with a stunning performance in the ongoing season of the Ranji Trophy. In just 5 games, he scored 729 runs at an average of over 104. The 19-year old will now be looking to replicate his success at the highest stage of the game too.

Gill looks ready

The BCCI, on Tuesday, posted a video of Gill sweating it out in the nets. Despite being an uncapped teenager, Gill was looking comfortable as he middled each and every delivery.

Meanwhile, the five-match series against New Zealand will start on January 23 in Napier.
