India will take on New Zealand in a three-match T20I series starting in Wellington on Wednesday. The two teams haven’t played each other much in the shortest format so far and the Kiwis have a lead of 6-2 over India in eight games (two out of the six wins for NZ came in the T20 World Cup).
As per the ICC’s rankings though, India are located four places better than the Kiwis at No.2 and have remained unbeaten in their last nine bilateral T20I series. If India can win the upcoming series, it will be the first time they will win a bilateral T20I series against New Zealand in their den.
Here we look back at past New Zealand-India T20I series
1. NZ won 2-0(2) on their soil in 2008-09
The Men in Blue have played the Black Caps in only three T20I series so far, two of which were played in India. The first one was played in New Zealand in 2008-09 and it was a two-game series which was won by the hosts 2-0. Despite India, led by MS Dhoni, scoring good totals batting first, they proved to be inadequate for New Zealand as Daniel Vettori’s men won in Christchurch by 7 wickets and in Wellington by 5 wickets, respectively.
2. NZ won 1-0(2) in India in 2012-13
The Black Caps, captained by Ross Taylor, tasted their first away series victory in T20Is against India when they bagged a two-match series 1-0 in 2012-13. After the first match in Vishakhapatnam was washed out without a ball being bowled, the visitors clinched the second game in Chennai by a solitary run to pocket the series. India were led in this series also by Dhoni. Brendon McCullum’s 55-ball 91 won New Zealand the game and he won both the Man of the Match and Man of the Series award.
3. India won 2-1(3) at home in 2017-18
India tasted their first bilateral series victory over New Zealand in T20Is in 2017-18 when Virat Kohli’s side went on to defeat Kane Williamson’s team 2-1 in a three-match series. India won the first match in Delhi by 53 runs (it was the final international appearance for Ashish Nehra) but Colin Munro’s unbeaten hundred saw the Kiwis squaring the series in Rajkot by winning the game by 40 runs.
The decider played in Thiruvananthapuram was reduced to an eight-over game because of rain and India pulled off a six-run victory to win the series 2-1. Jasprit Bumrah was chosen the Man of the Series for his exceptional bowling.
