New Zealand’s already-depleted squad for the upcoming ODI series against the Netherlands has been jolted by yet another blow with Mark Chapman testing positive for COVID-19. George Worker has been called in as his replacement and the left-handed batter would be raring to make full use of the opportunity. The three-match ODI series gets underway on Tuesday (March 29) at the Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui.

Meanwhile, Chapman, who was part of the T20I squad against the Netherlands, woke up with symptoms on Sunday (March 27). He subsequently underwent a Rapid Antigen Test in Auckland and returned with a positive result. Team head coach Gary Stead confirmed the development upon arrival in Mount Maunganui. He also confirmed that the rest of the squad remained unaffected.

We all really are feeling for Mark Chapman: Gary Stead

“It’s really unfortunate for Mark and we’re all really feeling for him at this time,” Stead told reporters. “He did the right thing in following the health guidelines and getting tested when he did,” he added. As far as Worker is concerned, the 32-year-old, who last played an ODI for New Zealand in 2018, will join the squad ahead of training on Monday.

Stead reckons it is a great opportunity for Worker as he has been doing well in domestic cricket lately. “It’s an exciting time for George to be back with the Black Caps and he thoroughly deserves his call-up following his strong form in the Ford Trophy,” Stead said.

It must be noted that New Zealand will field a second-string squad in this series with several first-choice players, including regular skipper Kane Williamson, plying their trade in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL). Tom Latham will lead the Kiwis and he will have the support of veterans like Martin Guptill and Ross Taylor.
