India Women suffered a 23-run defeat in the first game of the three-match T20I series against the New Zealand Women following a dramatic collapse in the chase. Sophie Devine’s 48-ball 62 played a key role in powering the White Ferns to a solid total of 159/4. In the run-chase, Smriti Mandhana struck a record 24-ball fifty and shared a 98-run stand for the 2nd wicket with Jemimah Rodrigues (39). However, once the partnership was broken in the 12th over, the Indian Women played poor strokes and got collapsed to just 136/10.

Mandhana breaks her own records:
24 – The 24-ball fifty by Smriti Mandhana is the fastest fifty in Women’s T20I cricket for India. The previous fastest was held by Mandhana only from 25 deliveries against England in the last year’s Mumbai T20I.
24 – Mandhana’s 24-ball fifty is the 2nd fastest to be on the losing side in Women’s T20I cricket. Deandra Dottin scored a fifty off 22 balls against Australia in the 2009 WT20. Mandhana’s previous fastest fifty from 25 deliveries also resulted in a defeat.
7 – Number of fifties for Mandhana in T20I cricket; the joint 2nd most fifty-plus scores for India in Women’s T20I cricket. Mithali Raj scored 17 fifties while Harmanpreet Kaur has seven fifty-plus scores that include a century.
A big stand in losing cause:
98 – The 98-run partnership between Smriti Mandhana and Jemimah Rodrigues is the highest in an unsuccessful chase in Women’s T20Is. Trisha Chetty and Dane van Niekerk added 96 runs for the first wicket against England in the 2016 Paarl T20I.
98 – Mandhana and Rodrigues’ 98-run stand is also the 2nd highest during a T20I loss in Women’s T20I cricket. Smriti Mandhana and Mithali Raj put on 129 for the first wicket in the last year’s Mumbai T20I against England while batting first.
101 – India’s score at the fall of the 2nd wicket; the second highest score where a team lost their 2nd wicket in an unsuccessful chase in Women’s T20I cricket. South Africa Women were 111/2 in the 2010 WT20 game against Windies where they finished with 158/4 chasing a target of 176.
A record collapse:
34 – Runs India scored from the loss of their 2nd wicket in this game; their worst 9-wicket collapse in Women’s T20I cricket. They added 55 runs for their last nine wickets against Australia in the 2011 Billericay T20I. During the WT20 semi-final against England which was India Women’s previous T20I game, they lost their last nine wickets for 59 runs; their 3rd worst 9-wicket collapse in this format.
34 – The 34 runs are also the fewest that the White Ferns conceded for picking the last nine wickets of a team in a T20I. The previous fewest were 44 runs by Pakistan during the 2017 Sharjah T20I.
Rodrigues joins a rare list:
500 – Jemimah Rodrigues has 500 runs from the 16 innings she has batted in Women’s T20I cricket. Among Men’s and Women’s cricket, Stafanie Taylor (540 runs) is the only other player with 500+ T20I runs before turning 19.
