It’s always risky if you utter any unfavourable words against the ace Indian batsman Virat Kohli or even indicate anything on those lines. Former England Test cricketer Nick Compton, grandson of the legendary Dennis Compton, got a bitter taste of this plain reality of Indian cricket recently when he questioned Kohli’s feat of scoring consecutive centuries against the Windies.

The 35-year-old opening batsman who has played 16 Tests between 2012 and 2016 and owns two international centuries, had replied to a tweet by former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra in which he equated consistency with Kohli. Chopra even said that he had heard Oxford Dictionary was thinking of replacing the word “consistency” with “Kohli” after the Indian captain hit his second consecutive hundred in the ODI series against the Caribbeans.

Is scoring against Windies good enough, Compton indicated

Compton replied to Chopra’s tweet: “Against the West Indies?” and hell broke loose. The Indian cricket fans strongly objected to Compton’s suggestion that scoring against a weak Windies side is not a big deal with one even abusing him.
On Sunday, Compton was on it again but this time, he was in a mood to make peace. Addressing the Indian fans, Compton said he has “utmost respect” for Indian cricket and he never doubted Kohli’s greatness. He also apologised and requested to keep it “friendly”. India and England fans though still continued to debate and argue things related to cricket.

Kohli hit three tons on the trot against the Windies in the five-match series that India won 3-1. His three-figure-scores came in the first three ODIs though the Men in Blue were able to win only one among them as the second game ended in a tie while they lost the third match.

The Indian captain also became the fastest batsman to become a member of the 10,000 –runs club in ODIs, bettering the record of the great Sachin Tendulkar, who was the first to make the club. The three consecutive centuries also saw Kohli’s tally of ODI tons going to 38 – just 11 less than Tendulkar’s record 49.
