Nidahas Trophy 2018: Four arrested for betting

The Nidahas Trophy 2018 where Sri Lanka, India, and Bangladesh locked horns in the triangular series was eventually won by India courtesy of Dinesh Karthik‘s belligerence in the dying stages of the Final against Bangladesh at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. However, apart from cricket, the series has also been a witness to some controversies.

Betting is a common phenomenon around cricket and there are several bookies who operate during major series’ and tournaments across the globe. The Nidahas Trophy 2018 also saw betting activities. As per media reports, the police busted four people in Hyderabad for betting during the tri-nation tournament in Sri Lanka.

The successful operation

The North Zone Team, Sleuths of the Commissioner’s Task Force, Hyderabad and the local police raided multiple premises under the Abids and Kulsumpura police stations. According to the police release, Rs 7.72 lakh, two TV sets, two set-top boxes, 10 cell phones and one calculator were confiscated. Betting activities were being conducted in those regions.

From the cricketing perspective, there were a couple of ugly incidents that happened during the series. Shakib Al Hasan and Nurul Hasan were fined for breaching the ICC Code of Conduct. They were handed a fine of 25 percent of their match fees along with one demerit point each. Bangladeshi skipper Shakib entered into a heated argument with the match-officials in the closing stages of Bangladesh’s virtual semi-final game against Sri Lanka.

On the other hand, Nurul Hasan tangled himself into a controversy when he barged into the Sri Lankan players during a drinks break. The series between the Asian giants was played to celebrate Sri Lanka’s 70th independence anniversary. Controversies marred the sanctity of the series, however, the series had an auspicious ending with some jaw-dropping encounters.
