Nine bookies held in Delhi for betting on IPL finale

Police on Monday arrested nine bookies from New Delhi’s Rohini area of for allegedly betting in the final match of the tenth edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL), which was won by the Mumbai Indians. The Delhi Police Crime Branch got hold of the nine bookies red-handed along with their book that had all the betting rates, two betting boxes and a total of 10 mobile phones. All of this was found at hotel Crownie Plaza.

8 of the accused have been identified as Anuj Sharma, 26, Sanchit Mittal, 22, Sahil Gupta, 28, Rishal Normal, 26, Sushant Sharma, 27, and Ashutosh, 2. Narinder Bansiwal, 30, a restaurant manager, was also arrested. The accused hail from middle-class families and were gambling to earn quick money.

5 arrested in Rajasthan

As per reports, these men engaged in gambling over the internet and phone. Earlier, five bookies were arrested from Rajasthan’s Bhilwara city with 43 mobile sets in connection with the IPL betting menace. Also, four bookies were arrested by the Chandausi police in UP’s Sambhal district and seized 1.17 lakh cash from them.

An application ‘Cricket Live Line’ was seen running on the mobile phones of all the nine held. They were found to be in touch with bookies named Montu, Rohit and Sanjay for betting on the IPL match, said an officer. Police said further investigation is underway to get into the depth of the issue and find the trailblazer of the plan.

Prior to this incident, the Kanpur batting racket had made headlines, which also included a former Maharashtra cricketer’s involvement. While no cases of spot-fixing were heard this season, betting rackets are busted each year during the IPL and the authorities have failed to come up with a permanent solution to fight this menace.
