Former Indian cricketer Harbhajan Singh has lauded senior batter Cheteshwar Pujara and emphasized the fact that his contributions with the bat sometimes go unnoticed.  With permanent skipper Rohit Sharma yet again out of the squad after testing Covid-19 positive, Pujara might open the innings for India against England.

The Three Lions are in good touch as they recently whitewashed New Zealand in a three-match Test series and their confidence will be up. However, Pujara will not back down from any challenge as he is in some good touch with the bat recently. The right-handed batter scored more than 700 runs in five matches in the County Championship.

He has been playing continuously in English conditions: Harbhajan on Pujara

Harbhajan Singh pointed out that even in County Cricket, some of the international stars play and Pujara has countered those challenges. He also lauded India’s former number three for playing in County when everyone was faring in the cash-rich Indian Premier League while also bringing to notice his contribution in the Australia series.

“He has been playing continuously in English conditions. Though you might say that in County cricket, the quality of bowlers is not like in international cricket, yes in county cricket also you encounter one or two bowlers, who play international cricket. It’s good to see Pujara picked this option to go and play County. He was in good form there. His contribution has always been there. When we went to Australia, he had a big contribution though people talk less about him,” Harbhajan Singh said in a discussion on Sportskeeda.

“In England also…whenever there is need to take the shine off the ball, to score runs and to hold one end, nobody has done the job better than Pujara. Talwar unke upar latak gayi thi. It was like ‘Drop him, others are playing alright’ which I thought was wrong. Pujara has been phenomenal for Team India when it comes to touring abroad because he doesn’t get out, he makes it easier for others, he takes the shine off the ball. That’s the reason India have won so many games abroad,” he added.

The rescheduled Test match between England and India will be played at the Edgbaston, Birmingham. The match will be played on July 1 (Friday).
