Kings XI Punjab registered three victories in the four games they played thus far in IPL 2018. Two of those victories came with the help of Chris Gayle’s bat, who scored a fifty against Chennai Super Kings and a century against Sunrisers Hyderabad. Punjab team management will surely want more such knocks from the big man to power them to playoffs.
Punjab team mentor Virender Sehwag will be the happiest person in the world for picking the world boss at the very last moment in the IPL 2018 Auction. All other seven teams opted not to take the greatest T20 batsman but the former Indian opener went on to pick him, which is already a successful one for KXIP.
Speaking about Chris Gayle’s form in the ongoing IPL season, Sehwag said as quoted by NDTV Sports, “Nobody is a greater entertainer than him. That was a strategy because we had to buy other players also. He would have cost more if he was taken up in the first phase,” Sehwag added.
“He was injured last season and it is difficult to score runs. Ask any cricketer, with a back injury, it’s difficult to score runs and that’s what he told us also. He missed a lot of games because he had pain in his back.”
Sehwag feels everyone loves Gayle
What surprise many was when Royal Challengers Bangalore decided not to retain the universe boss. Sehwag said that even the RCB skipper Virat Kohli dropped the idea of picking Gayle at the auction table. Sehwag went onto add that Gayle is a guy who fits in the dominant KXIP side.
“Kohli dropped him also (from Royal Challengers Bangalore). I was expecting nobody will pick him, he’s of my age. If we pick him, he’s a good guy to do the marketing. He’s fabulous with all the marketing guys, everyone loves Chris Gayle. He fits in our group also. We bought him for Rs 2 crore and if he wins two games, I recovered my money. Still more games to go and if he wins two more times he wins four games. He’s a big asset for KXIP now,” Sehwag concluded.
