The Bushfire Appeal Charity Match, which was played at the Junction Oval in Melbourne, saw the who’s who of the yesteryear cricketing and rugby stars participating for a noble cause. The proceeds of the match and donation made by the audience in attendance and by viewers on TV were given to a charity that fought against the bushfire victims.

Ricky Ponting XI took on Adam Gilchrist XI which had many stars like Brian Lara, Andrew Symonds, Matthew Hayden, Justin Langer, Brett Lee, Yuvraj Singh, Peter Siddle, Dan Christian, Wasim Akram, Courtney Walsh amongst others.

All these played a T-10 match which saw the Ponting XI winning the match by one run. The encounter saw duels of varying degrees sending fans on a trip of nostalgia, as Walsh dismissed Langer and Lara turned back the clock with some eye-catching drives and pulls.

Sachin Tendulkar also came out of retirement and picked up a bat after more than five years, to play out an over from Australia women’s cricketer Ellyse Perry during the innings break and hit some crisp flicks and drives, showing that 46-year-old still had it, despite a dodgy shoulder and the fact that he retired from the game in 2013.

One such duel was also played between Yuvraj Singh and Brett Lee. Two of the best of their generation went against each other and another great of the game, West Indies’ Chris Gayle seemed to be hooked onto the encounter with much interest. He loved seeing the 2011 World Cup’s Man of the Tournament taking on the 2003 World Cup winner. The ‘Universe Boss’ was shrieking and asking the former Indian all-rounder to go downtown and smash the Aussie speedster.

Ponting XI posted 104 for 5 on the board in 10 overs with former West Indies captain Brian Lara top-scoring with 30 runs off 11 balls. His knock included 3 boundaries and two sixes, while captain Ricky Ponting himself contributed with 26 runs. In reply, the Gilchrist XI started off well with Shane Watson and Adam Gilchrist adding 49 runs for the first wicket. Watson top-scored with 30 runs while Gilchrist made 11 in the partnership.
