Brendon McCullum got out on the final delivery of Day 3 as the Australians edged closer to victory in the first Test at Wellington. Adam Voges completed his double century, his second in Tests. Peter Siddle starred with bat and ball, ensuring his contribution was noted. The Kiwis did their utmost to ensure that a draw could be salvaged at the very least with useful contributions from Tom Latham and Martin Guptill.

The NZ v AUS 1st Test Day 3 began with Adam Voges and Peter Siddle beginning where they had left off the previous day. Starting on 176, Voges completed his second double century of his Test career. He was supported by Peter Siddle en route to his 239. Siddle too played a brilliant cameo, compiling 49 off 81 balls. Although he was unlucky not to add to his tally of half centuries, Adam Voges was the star of the show. The latter, however, was dismissed when he chipped the ball back to Mark Craig. The Australian innings closed on a mammoth 562 in 154 overs.

The New Zealand innings began brightly as openers Martin Guptill and Tom Latham began chalking out the survival tactics. Both openers warded off the threat of Josh Hazelwood and Jackson Bird. However, the introduction of Nathan Lyon proved to be a masterstroke as the latter successfully removed both openers. A needless aggressive stroke from Guptill and an outside edge from Latham saw both players sent back to the pavilion. Kane Williamson’s woes with the bat continued as he was dismissed once again by Josh Hazelwood.

The Westpac oval hoped and prayed that skipper Brendon McCullum would be the unlikely savior for the Kiwis. It was not to be as he was dismissed by Mitchell Marsh shortly after his arrival at the middle as he was adjudged LBW by Marsh. Debutante Henry Nicholls remained unbeaten on 31 and will be looking to capitalize as play resumes tomorrow.
