March 29 is a special date for Virender Sehwag and not for one but two reasons. It was on this day in 2004 that the former India opener had blasted 309 against Pakistan in Multan during India’s historic tour of the neighbouring country. In 2008, Sehwag surpassed his own score to post 319 against South Africa in Chennai. That was also on March 29. Sehwag continued to be the only Indian batsman to score a triple hundred in Tests till Karun Nair joined the club in 2016 after scoring a 303 not out against England at home.

On Friday, the former cricketer who came to be known as ‘Multan ka Sultan’ after that 309 in 2004, recalled his feat on its 15th anniversary and had a conversation with Sourav Ganguly, who was his captain at the time, that was liked by the fans. While India won the Multan Test by an innings and 52 runs and went on to win the series – their only on Pakistani soil, the Chennai Test was drawn. Anil Kumble was the captain of India on that occasion.

Sehwag had changed the definition of opening in Tests

Ganguly had a role to play in Sehwag’s rise as an opener, thanks to his ability to strike even the best of deliveries at will. His brisk scoring high up in the order not only took off the pressure from on the middle order but also gave his team that much more team to force a result. The Nawab of Najafgarh went on to change the definition of opening in Tests, marking a sharp departure from what it was like during the era of the iconic Sunil Gavaskar.

Sehwag tweeted on the occasion of the 15th and 11th anniversaries of his twin triple centuries on Friday to which Ganguly replied: “There are 2 great test openers for india .. one is this man.”

The former Delhi cricketer though didn’t stop there and replied to Ganguly’s reply saying: “Great captains help make better players.” The tribute to one of India’s best captains was clear in his second tweet that made the fans nostalgic.

Sehwag had come close to scoring a third triple hundred in Tests and it was against Sri Lanka but fell short of seven runs in Mumbai in December 2009.
