South African all-rounder Marizanne Kapp shattered a plethora of records on Monday by slamming a magnificent ton against England. Kapp scored 150 off just 213 deliveries to guide her team to a good total before the English bowlers dished out the visitors for 284 runs at the County Ground in Taunton on the first day of the one-off Test.

While the English team saw a bunch of new faces and relied on the young newcomers, South Africa had their hopes on their experienced ones. The South African team was playing a Test match after a long break of eight years, whereas the English team had experienced a couple of games in the format recently as they had faced India last year for a one-off Test, and Australia this year for the Ashes Test match.

England started off well as bowlers kept them in a commanding situation. The experienced ones- Kate Cross and Nat Sciver were in charge of the wicket-taking duties, but they were joined by debutants Issy Wong and Lauren Bell who got their maiden Test wickets as England overpowered South Africa.

Marizanne Kapp anchored her team with a crucial knock

That is when the English side faced the storm named Marizanne Kapp. She created and broke multiple records while batting her way into the game. She walked in when South Africa was struggling at 45/4, and got her half-century off  80 balls thereby converting it into her maiden Test 100 as she achieved the feat in 151 balls. Kapp handled the situation really well and completed 150 runs in the 212th ball that she faced.

Kapp also etched her name in history books by becoming the fastest player to score 150 in the Women’s Test. The record was previously held by former Australian cricketer Karen Rolton as she had taken 213 deliveries to achieve the feat. She also registered the highest individual score by a player batting at the No. 6 position or lower in the Women’s Test.

Kapp anchored the innings at a time when the team needed someone to lead from the front. She rescued her team from a partial collapse. Her knock will be remembered for years to come, but for now, the South African bowlers will look to do justice to her powerful knock by restricting England to a low total in order to maintain the lead.

Meanwhile, let’s look at how Twitter celebrated Marizanne Kapp’s brilliant knock:
