Cricket world woke up to a sad piece of news on Friday (March 4) as former Australian cricketer Rod Marsh has passed away at 74. One of the most influential figures in world cricket, Marsh had suffered a heart attack midway through an in an event last Thursday. He was subsequently rushed to a hospital in Queensland. His condition, however, never got better and he eventually breathed his last a week later.
One of the finest wicketkeepers to have graced the game, Marsh was instrumental in Australia’s emergence as a formidable force in world cricket. He was a vital cog of the national team in the 70s and 80s. While his glovework was précised to say the least, his batting blitzes also took the Aussies to many remarkable victories.
Rod Marsh held the record of most dismissals by a wicketkeeper in Tests
In fact, he was the first Australian wicketkeeper to muster a Test century. He went onto muster three tons in the format. Coming to his brilliance behind the stumps, his tally of 355 dismissals was the highest by a wicketkeeper in Test cricket by the time of his retirement. Notably, Marsh represented the Aussies in 96 Tests and 92 ODIs between 1970 and 1984.
Notably, Marsh also served Australian cricket in the administrative department. He headed Australia’s cricket academy before taking the same job same England. In 2014, the legendary cricketer was appointed Australia’s chairman of selectors, a position he held for two years. With Marsh being such big personality in the cricket circle, RIP wishes and condolences came in from different quarters.
Notably, Team Australia players are also expected to sport black arm-bands during the opening Test against Pakistan, which gets underway on Friday in Rawalpindi.
“Rod was a colossal figure in Australian cricket who gave close to 50 years of incredible service to Australian cricket, from his debut in the Ashes series of 1970-71, through to his time as National Selector, when many of the current group of Australian men’s players came into close contact with him,” Test captain Pat Cummins told reporters.
Meanwhile, let’s look at how Twitterati mourned Rod Marsh’s demise:
