Babar Azam and Abdullah Shafique rescue Pakistan in the second innings against Australia
When Pakistan started their second innings, they were staring down the barrel, as they were set an improbable target of 506 for victory. The hosts lost their first two wickets with just 21 runs on the board, as the Aussies were all over the Babar Azam-led side.
And, that was when Azam and his partner in crime Abdullah Shafique came together to keep the Australian bowling attack at bay. The two Pakistan batters played out the rest of the day and stitched together a magnificent counter-attacking partnership of 171 runs for the third wicket. While Azam is batting on 102*, Shafique helped himself to a patient 226-ball 71*.
For Australia, Nathan Lyon and Cameron Green scalped one wicket each with the ball in hand. In the first innings, Australia posted a mammoth total of 556/9, and Pakistan were bowled out for a paltry total of 148. The Aussies declared their second innings with their scorecard reading 97/2, setting Pakistan a target in excess of 500.
The three-match Test series between the two sides is currently locked at 0-0 after the 1st Test match at Rawalpindi ended in a draw.
